CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION
Waking Up White
While reading Waking Up White and holding a White Privilege Symposium in La Crosse in 2020, we will be asking ourselves the question, "What does it mean to be White?" and helping community members learn that there is a white racial viewpoint that is narrow and limited and that others do not share. An additional and important educational component is to have our community gain a collective understanding of how white supremacy, white privilege, and other forms of oppression operate in general -- and in particular, in the La Crosse region. This Gillette commercial is getting a tremendous amount of attention. It appears that some men interpret the message as being a slam on traditional manhood. Others believe the ad is brilliant, and it’s thought provoking message is much needed in today’s World.
Here’s what we know. We know that approximately 90% of the perpetrators of Domestic Assault and Sexual Violence are Men. We also know that about 90% of men are NOT perpetrators, they’re what we refer to as “well meaning men.” Voices of Men believes that “well meaning men” can play a huge role in reducing acts of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
We suspect that is the message that Gillette was trying to convey. Whether or not they were successful is up to you to judge.
